A conference was recently held in Bangalore with Archbishop Rev. Dr. Peter Machado, A key figure in the discussion surrounding the Karnataka caste census. The meeting also included several other leaders: John Prem, Anto Benz, Venugoal, and Joseph. The purpose of the meeting was to address the community’s concerns and approach to the upcoming Social and Educational Survey, popularly known as the caste census.
The census has become a topic of debate, particularly concerning the inclusion of “Christian castes,” such as “Kuruba Christian” or “Vokkaliga Christian,” in the survey form. Archbishop Machado has publicly stated that while it is essential for the Christian community to cooperate with the census to ensure accurate data, individuals should be free to identify with a specific group or simply declare themselves as “Christian.” He has also been a vocal advocate for the rights of Christian citizens, emphasizing that they should not be discriminated against in social and economic benefits due to their faith. The meeting with the various leaders likely served as an opportunity to unify their stance and guide the community on how to participate in the census while protecting their rights and identity.
