Shootout in Hubballi accused shot in the leg, two arrested

Hubballi, Karnataka: Police have arrested robbers who were fleeing after committing a robbery in the twin cities of Hubballi and Dharwad by shooting them in the legs.

Two accused in connection with robbery and extortion cases were arrested by the police after being shot in the legs in the Bendigeri police station area late on Monday night. The arrested have been identified as Dilip and Nilesh, both from Gujarat. The three other accused who were with them are absconding and an operation is underway to arrest them, the police said.

Last night, the accused, who had tried to rob a house by extorting money from a biker, attacked the police and tried to escape. During this, the police opened fire, resulting in the arrest of two of the injured and admitted to Hubballi KIMS Hospital. Three injured police personnel have also been admitted to KIMS Hospital.

Police Commissioner visits KIMS Hospital

Following the incident, City Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar, who visited KIMS Hospital, inquired about the health of the police personnel. Later, speaking to the media, he said that 17 checkpoints had been set up in the twin cities in the wake of the robbery cases. Meanwhile, on Monday midnight, a man from Kundgol, who was out on a bike, was attacked by a group of four or five people, who then fled on the bike, snatching cash and mobile phones.

Shortly after this, Ravichandra was extorted. Then, an incident of an attempt to rob the house of Sharik on Mantur Road was reported. As soon as this matter came to light, our staff was alerted. They started checking those who were speeding suspiciously on a bike. At this time, the miscreants tried to escape by attacking the police. Then our staff shot them in the leg and arrested them, they said.

Police personnel also injured

Three personnel, including PSI Ashok, were injured in the attack by the miscreants. During this, the police fired four rounds. As a result, one bullet was fired at the two accused. The other three accused fled. The gunshot victims, Dilip and Nilesh, are from Gujarat.

Several cases have been registered against the duo. They are accused in the theft of Rs 4 lakh from a hundi at a Jain temple in Hubballi and in the robbery of two shops under the jurisdiction of Navanagar police station in Hubballi. Apart from this, more than 15 cases have been registered against them in Gadag, Bellary, Chitradurga and other districts. Police Commissioner Shashi Kumar said that a net has been laid to arrest the remaining accused.
