Davangere: The police have so far arrested 25 people in connection with the case of stone pelting on the Channagiri police station in the district and damaging the vehicles, officials said on Monday.
An angry mob vandalized the police station and damaged several vehicles in connection with the lock-up death in Channagiri town. At least 11 police personnel were injured in the incident.
The investigation of the case has now been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
25 people have been arrested under IPC Sections 353 (obstructing the duty of a public servant, assault or criminal force) and 307 (attempt to murder) in connection with the mob attack on the police station, personnel and properties. The official said that the accused have been remanded in judicial custody.
Five police teams have been formed to investigate the incident and the accused have been arrested based on CCTV footage and available video clips, he said.
Adil (30) was arrested on May 24 and taken to the police station on the charge of gambling with matka. Later his health deteriorated and he died in the station. Alleging that Adil’s death was a lockup, a mob pelted stones at the police station late on Friday night, police said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police and Channagiri Station Inspector have been suspended in the wake of the attack on the police station.
Home Minister G Parameshwar said that the Deputy SP and Inspector have been suspended due to negligence on the part of the police. An inquiry has been ordered. The incident should not have happened. We will take action.
As he (the deceased) was involved in matka gambling, the police arrested him. He died due to some health problems he developed at that time. He said that this will be known from the postmortem report.
It will be known from the inquiry whether the police arrested him because he did not pay the bribe. Action will be taken if such involvement is found. We will fire them (officers),” he said.
