Bengaluru :A single-member bench headed by Justice Hemant Chandan heard a total of six petitions filed by advocate S Ismail Zabivullah, Shantinagar Block Congress Committee, former Mayor BN Manjunath Reddy, N Nagaraj and others challenging the redistribution of wards under the Burhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) .
lawyer KN Phanindra, who represented the State Election Commission, said, “No political party wants elections now. Whatever party was in power, they were trying to make it to their advantage. Any problems, including omissions in redistricting, can be rectified in the next election. BBMP has not had an election for almost two years. The commission is bound by the constitutional framework to hold elections within a specified time frame. Therefore, the petitions of the petitioners should be allowed to be held without consideration,” he pleaded.
“The Supreme Court has kept a watch on the BBMP elections by passing orders in July and May. The commission is preparing the voter list in a very tight situation to comply with the Supreme Court order. “The redistribution of constituencies is correct and if any irregularity is found, the court can issue guidelines to the state government to correct it in the next election,” he said.
