Bengaluru : Karnataka High Court has directed the state government not to make Kannada compulsory in higher education.

Justice Niruraj and Nathuraj. Sachin Shankar Magadum’s divisional bench said, “The petitions filed against the government’s decision to make Kannada compulsory in higher education under the NEP -2020 are pending. Stated in the interim order.

Earlier, Additional Solicitor General MB Naragund had asked the state government to take up the issue with the state government to discuss its decision.

Advocate General Prabhuling K informed the Navdagi High Court that four lakh students have already been selected from the Kannada language. Admission is now closed. The students who applied have learned Kannada upto 12th grade. Advocates therefore argue that they should not have any objections to learning Kannada in higher education. The hearing has been postponed by the Central Government to clarify its stand in 4 weeks.
