Kannada learning compulsory in colleges: High Court upset with government policy

Bengaluru: The High Court on Thursday expressed displeasure over the issue of making Kannada learning compulsory in the state’s graduate colleges.

The High Court, which held hearings on the PIL petition, had raised displeasure over the government’s policy.

The Divisional Bench of the High Court challenged the state government.
Is there a mandate in national education policy?
Can Kannada learning be made compulsory for foreign students? Is Kannada mandatory in higher education? The High Court questioned the government.

The state government’s advocate told the High Court that there is an opportunity to encourage Kannada language learning. The government has sought time for an argument and the hearing has been postponed to November 15.
