New Delhi: The National Commission for Women (NCW) registered 28,811 cases of crime against women last year and 55 per cent of these cases were reported from Uttar Pradesh.
The highest number of complaints, 8,540, were received in the category of threat to dignity, which includes harassment other than domestic violence, followed by 6,274 complaints of domestic violence, NCW data said.
The statistics revealed that there were 4,797 complaints of dowry harassment, 2,349 complaints of molestation, 1,618 complaints of police indifference against complaints lodged by women and 1,537 complaints of rape and attempted rape.
It said there were 805 complaints of sexual harassment, 605 complaints of cyber crime and 472 complaints of stalking.
According to the statistics, Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of complaints at 16,109, followed by Delhi at 2,411 and Maharashtra at 1,343.
1,312 complaints were registered in Bihar, 1,165 in Madhya Pradesh, 1,115 in Haryana, 1,011 in Rajasthan, 608 in Tamil Nadu, 569 in West Bengal and 501 in Karnataka.
