Bengaluru: The High Court on Monday directed the state government to redistribute the BBMP wards and gave them 12 weeks time.

Ex-Mayor B.N. Manjunath Reddy questioned the decision of the single-member bench of the High Court, which upheld the notification issued by the previous state government on June 14, 2022, re-examining the BBMP ward. A division bench headed by Chief Justice PB Varale heard the appeal filed by Manjunath Reddy and others on Monday

The verdict came after Advocate General Shashikiran Shetty submitted that re-allocation of wards was necessary as the government had to correct the errors found in the previous government notification allocation process.

The BBMP Act allowed the state government to increase the number of wards from 198 to 243 in January 2021 and a final notification regarding the demarcation was issued. A batch of petitions were filed challenging the notification, but the single judge upheld the final notification.

The committee constituted to submit the ward demarcation report is required to strictly follow the guidelines laid down by the government. However, the appellants contended that there were lapses in ward reclassification. He said that ward redistribution will improve city administration and public participation.
