Bengaluru:  Although the number of Judges and Judicial officers has increased in recent times, pressure is increasing on the existing Judges as the posts are not filled.

The number of cases pending in the State High Court, District and Taluk courts has increased to 20 lakh. According to the National Judicial Data Grid, the number of pending cases in district and taluk courts has increased to 18.08 lakh. According to the data till August 30, 2022, 2.98 lakh cases are pending in Karnataka High Court

According to retired High Court Judge, Lokayukta Justice BS Patil, non-filling of vacancies has led to increase in pending cases.

The post was vacant for 5 months till he was appointed to this post. Delays in appointing Judges when they retire or are transferred have also contributed to the increase in cases. It will be difficult for the courts to issue orders as the witnesses are no longer coming to the court.

Speaking to The Media, N Santosh Hegde | Former Judge-SCI, Lokayukta-Karnataka said, “Just increasing the number of Judges and infrastructure will not reduce the number of pending cases. Work should be done to reduce speculative litigation.
